Epsom & St Helier Hospitals Choose LapCabby to Tackle Covid-19

The Challenge

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust offer an extensive range of services to people in south west London and north east Surrey by operating two main hospitals: Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, while also running clinics at Sutton Hospital.

The teaching hospitals play a vital role in educating and training tomorrow’s doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Both sites work in partnership with St George’s Hospital and St George’s Medical School in south London to deliver high quality education and research.

There are approximately 900,000 patients coming through the doors of the two main hospitals every year. A fleet team of almost 5,000 staff and 500 volunteers work tirelessly to keep the busy hospitals running, even throughout the global pandemic of Covid-19.

The Solution

The hospitals combined their resources to launch a new facility specifically set up to treat patients suffering the effects of the Coronavirus. The new healthcare unit due to open in May 2020 in Headley Court in Surrey, with over 300 hospital beds and designed to aid those in recovery from the virus, needed equipment and supplies quickly, in an environment where all deliveries are taking longer than usual.

LapCabby work with many resellers so it’s important to have a reliable product they can recommend to clients. The healthcare industry – particularly at a time of crisis – doesn’t have the time or resources to waste on technology that’s faulty or doesn’t do what it originally promised.

According to reseller PCS, Epsom & St Helier had already used charging units from another manufacturer but had experienced issues with them and a poor service. They were keen to try a different supplier and, after previous good experiences of working with LapCabby, PCS thought LapCabby would be the right fit.

The DeskCabby unit was chosen as it was small, compact and, when fitted with a keypad locking system was secure and ideal for the environment at the new treatment centre. Enough staff were going to be using these that keys would end up getting lost or left in the unit making it less secure.

Timing was also an issue – Covid-19 took a grip of the UK in early 2020 and having the treatment centre ready and fully-functioning as soon as possible was paramount. Epsom & St Helier wanted 38 DeskCabby units immediately and didn’t have time to wait for production – it was agreed therefore that LapCabby would ship the first half of the order to them straight away and make the remaining amount to order.

Each DeskCabby had to be fitted with a bespoke keypad locking system (the standard design uses a key).

To ensure fastest possible turnaround LapCabby used their own drivers and vehicles to deliver the units – during the pandemic courier companies were overwhelmed and ordinary deliveries were taking longer to arrive at their destination than usual.
